What Is a Pulmonary Embolus?

Jan 25, 2024

A clot traveling to the lungs is called a pulmonary embolus. It's a serious medical condition that occurs when a blood clot breaks loose from somewhere else in the body — typically a deep vein in the leg — and travels through the bloodstream to lodge in an artery in the lung. This can block blood flow to part of the lung, potentially causing damage and even death.

Here are some additional details about pulmonary emboli:

  • Symptoms: Symptoms of a pulmonary embolus can vary depending on the size and location of the clot. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing, rapid heart rate and lightheadedness.
  • Causes: Risk factors for developing a pulmonary embolus include recent surgery, prolonged bed rest, certain medical conditions and certain medications.
  • Diagnosis: Doctors may diagnose a pulmonary embolus using a variety of tests, such as a physical exam, blood tests, a chest X-ray or a CT scan.
  • Treatment: Treatment for a pulmonary embolus typically involves blood thinners to prevent the clot from growing or causing further damage. In some cases, surgery or other procedures may be necessary to remove the clot.
